Leech Lake Ice Fishing

In February, 2009, three friends and I journeyed north from the Twin Cities on our annual ice fishing trip to Leech Lake, MN.

A shout of "big fish!" heard through heavily-muffled ears, always captures the attention of nearby fisherpersons. Art carefully guides the fish into the hole while Matt bares his hand and prepares, if necessary, to plunge it into the icy waters to grab a fish too big, too heavy, to lift to the ice using the pole. What will it be? Pike? Walleye?
22
This time it's a walleye and it just the right size for eating. Art is rightfully happy as there is no better dinner than fresh caught walleye, especially one of this size.
23
These nine perch came from this hole in a period of about 15 minutes, along with 10 others that were too small to keep. Sometimes it can be a long wait between hits. Then, suddenly a school appears and it is fast fishing as one can literally catch fish as fast as one can rebait and get the lure in the water. Then the action suddenly stops as a big pike moves in or as the school moves on.
24
The promise of a fine meal. As mentioned earlier, Leech Lake is huge and must contain a enormous number of perch, walleyes, northern pike, muskies and other fish.
25
Matt stands beside his truck as our little caravan ground to a halt when the guide's truck broke down in front of us. A quick call to the resort and help was soon on its way to pull the disabled truck back to a warmer place and we were soon on our way.

Brindley's Harbor resort is best seen from the ice coming back from a successful day of fishing. But any day out on the ice with good friends, lively banter, and an opportunity to catch a few fish is a good day. An adventure, such as this one, is hard to come by, but always cherished.
27
Not all the cabins are open during the winter.

Another veiw of Brindley's Harbor as we come off the ice road and onto land.
